How accurately should an historical fiction follow the persons and sequence of events of true history? Where may an author err on the side of creativity? Where should an author not sway from the historical events?

Historical fiction should strike a balance between accuracy and creativity. Here are some guidelines:

Accuracy:

1. Major Events: Key historical events should be accurately depicted to maintain the integrity of the historical context. This helps ground the story in reality and provides a framework for the narrative.
2. Historical Figures: When using real historical figures, their major actions and characteristics should be portrayed accurately. This respects their legacy and ensures the story remains believable.
3. Cultural and Social Norms: Accurately depicting the cultural and social norms of the time period helps create an authentic setting and avoids anachronisms.

Creative Freedom:

1. Fictional Characters: Authors can create fictional characters to interact with historical figures and events. This allows for creative storytelling while still respecting the historical context.
